Onion Juice for Hair Growth and Reversing Grey

Onion Juice for Hair Loss and Gray HairOnions are more than just a healthy vegetable. They have been shown to help increase hair growth and reverse grey hair when applied to the scalp.

Onion juice has been used for hundreds of years to treat thin and greying hair.

Onion juice helps by providing nourishment and circulation to the hair follicles.  It also kills germs, parasites, and is helpful in treating some fungi infections, all of which can aid in prevention of hair loss.

Onions are also high in sulfur, which helps in regenerating the hair follicles, and they are beneficial in decreasing inflammation.

A few weeks ago, a breakthrough cure for thin and grey hair was published and showed great results for the effectiveness of a topical compound called pseudocatalase (PC-KUS). The reason this topical cream was found effective was that it targeted the cause of grey and thinning hair. Research from Bradford University in the UK and several other universities have shown that grey and thinning hair is caused by a buildup of hydrogen peroxide and a decrease in the natural antioxidant, catalase. When a buildup of hydrogen peroxide occurs at the hair follicles, it causes oxidative stress resulting in greying and thinning hair.

Catalase can not only be found in the topical cream, but it can also be produced from the application of onion juice! Onion juice reacts similarly, as when it is applied, it increases the level of catalase on the skins surface, reducing the buildup of hydrogen peroxide.

Onion Juice for Hair Loss and Greying Hair

The results from the topical application of onion juice can be observed within just a few weeks.

One study from the Journal of Dermatology found that just after four weeks of using onion juice, 74% of individuals with alopecia areata experienced significant hair regrowth. Within six weeks of using onion juice, 84% of the individuals were reported to have hair regrowth.

How to Make Onion Juice

When I first started researching using onion juice for hair growth, I immediately did a search for where I could buy some. Even though you can buy it online, it is better to use the juice of a fresh onion as any juice you purchase is stored for months and the fresh juice will be more potent. It is best to make the juice in small amounts so it is does not have to be stored for a long period of time.

There are 3 Ways You Can Make Onion Juice:

1) Juicer- If you have a juicer, this is the easiest way to make onion juice. Just peel the onion, cut it in half and put it in the juicer. I decided to buy a juicer just for the purpose of juicing onions because it is the fastest and easiest way to get the most juice. You can get an inexpensive juicer and they work great, I bought this one because of the very low price and absolutely love it!

2) Blender/Food Processor- Peel the onion and cut it into about 4 sections, then put them into your blender or food processor and start blending. Lastly, strain the mixture so that only the juice is remaining.

3) Grater – Peel the onion and cut it in half. Grate both halves of the onion over a dish and then strain the mixture to get just the juice.

How to Use Onion Juice for Hair

For the first application of onion juice, you may want to test it on a small area (in case you may be allergic to it) or water down the mixture. Even though it’s natural, pure onion juice is strong.

Apply the onion juice daily to your scalp and lightly massage it in, this helps stimulate the hair follicles and allows for maximum absorption.

Leave the onion Juice on for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Eww! The smell is powerful, but the results may be worth it! To avoid smelling like onion all day, you can apply it at night and then wash it out before you go to bed.

If you’re allergic to onions or are looking for another option, another common remedy for thinning hair is ginseng.

    Very interesting! Thanks for posting.

I’m curious, what causes the build up of hydrogen peroxide in the first place?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

The build up in hydrogen peroxide is most attributed to the reduction in the antioxidant compound catalase.

      • Gayle says

Do you know if the PC-KUS topical cream is available for purchase and if so, how I could obtain some.

hiiii….i read some where about onion juice for hair treatment…but to daily make onion juice was too boring…so i boiled onion juice and garlic paste with coconut oil..till all the water gets evaporate….then i am applying this oil twice in a month….my hair loss problem is almost gone…..but is this process proper???….please do reply..

Hi im interested in the remedy but I have a question..how do I blend the onions so that I can get the juice out without turning it into a thick creamy paste thats almost impossible to strain.? If you or anybody can answer me n tell me what im possibly doin wrong I would apreciate it thank you..:)

        • Lori Klein says

I just juice the onion and apply it as is. There ends up being some small pieces of onion in the mixture, it’s not a clear liquid, but it still works out great. I wash my hair after a few hours of applying it.

        • Anonymous says

After getting thick paste just filter it with very thin tea strainer , you will get the pure juice and pulp will be left in the strainer.

        • Anonymous says

Antonio, I have been asked about “This Process” and since I can not recommend what I have not experimented with…….. I Did.

Use of Blender, yes it’s a process. Tuna Fish Can & Tuna Can Strainer does work….. Potato Ricer Also….. Just let the Blended Onion sit for a little (To Settle) makes it easier to “Press”. I also afterwards WILL Use The Not Onion Paste for cooking.

Yes, I have finally Experimented with the Onion For Hair, I have not taken pictures however have seen new growth from recess area….. (applied ~ 3 times a week going on ~ 6 months) no difference in color but I don’t really have much Graying to begin …….. Yet LOL (Hopefully now with this “Ritual” wont for some time) LOL

To Mention – Can ADD A Boost with Garlic Juice……. Haven’t done yet but 1 Day Onion, Next Day Garlic??? Or Combine 80% Onion/20% Garlic………… It’s mainly Boosting On “Allisin” (in both if you Chop and Let Sit for 10 mins before blending) and upping the “Catalase”

        • Terri says

The easiest way to juice to onion 9if you don’t have a juice extractor) is to blend up half of an onion in a food processor or blender. Pour the processed onion into a coffee filter, set it in a strainer, and place it over a measuring cup (or cup large enuf to catch the drippings). Let it sit for a couple hours, and then pick up the filter full of minced onion, and wring the juice out by squeezing the filter in your hands. And you have a good 1/2 cup of fresh onion juice. Good luck. I’m trying it too. ~: )

Hi, I am Lucy from Kenya. I have been using a clean handkirchief that I have dedicated to strain the juice from the thick creamy onion. It is easy and giving clean juice. Have been using for 3 days in a week and have observed great results. Good luck!

        • Lori Klein says

I wash my hair with shampoo (I use Castile soap with essential oils) and this usually takes out most of the onion smell.

        • Lori Klein says

I apply the onion juice directly. The participants in the study applied it directly to their scalp as well. I’m not sure if applying oil first may prevent absorption.

        • Lori says

Many have shared success with it in the comments for increasing hair growth. I’m not sure if anyone has shared their results with it for grey hair yet.

      • Sam says

Have you are anyone else have success reversing white/gray hair growth using onion juice treatment? How often should the treatment be done (ie daily, weekly)? And lastly, what do you use to wash it out? Obviously, getting rid of the smell asap is a concern! (I teach at elementary and secondary schools, and students definitely won’t deal well with that!)

  2. Alex says

Wow interesting. I knew about the hair loss deal and started on it myself. Just didn’t know it also worked for gray and thin hair. Nice to keep up my motivation for continuing it. I do it when I don’t got uni or don’t forget it, meaning 3-4 days a week. I think it’s working but not sure, so far I’ve only done it 2.5 weeks.

I got some questions since it seems you’ve tried it. Hope you don’t mind.

    1. Do you have the study for the gray thinning hair? I would be delighted to read it or just references that would lead me closer to the study article.

    2. When you apply onion juice scalp and leave it for 1 hour or more, doesn’t your hair become stiff? Mine does but when I rinse it later on with warm water (not hot) and it becomes fine again.

    3. When you apply onion juice on your scalp, don’t you lose hairs? I see them when I apply the juice on my scalp and when I dry my hair with towel later on.

The best thing that has happened since I started applying onion juice is that my dandruff has disappeared or become a very small area on my head. That’s very great since I used to have hair fall which were stuck in the big dandruff flakes. So I recommend people with dandruff and not being able to kill it to try this out. You may find the smell bad so once a week should be fine. I tried oil in my hair but it made my skin too dry after shampooing it after bath but this works great. (No, I’m not selling anything, lol.)

    • Anonymous says

Losing hair extra may not as bad as it seems.. These hairs may have been close to the end of their cycle and the topical may have just accelerated the process a little.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

      Hi Alex,

The study is linked at the bottom of the article. My hair does become stiff when I apply it as well, but after I rinse it out, it no longer is. When I apply it, I lightly massage it into my scalp. I haven’t noticed any hair loss when applying it. I have been using it for about a month now, and I have noticed a lot less hair loss.

Thank you for bringing up that it helped with dandruff, glad to hear that it disappeared for you! That’s great!

      • Chathura says

can adding cinnanmon be any harm to the paste i add cinnamon as it reduces the smell and u can keep the paste on your hair for any time you want

        • Lori Klein says

I don’t think it would cause any problem adding it. Some add different ingredients to boost the benefits, like garlic etc.

    • Ashy says

Hi, Can you tell me for how long do you have to apply onion juice on hair and scalp and withing how much of duration will the dandruff lessen?

  3. says

Did this actually work to cure your grey hair? I’m very skeptical, and I’m a natural/green enthusiast! I’m skeptical because if this actually worked, everyone would’ve already known about it and would be trying it. But, if you say it’s actually worked for you, then I can believe it.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I have been using it for about a month and it has made a great difference in reducing hair loss (I don’t have grey hair so I haven’t been able to test that out on myself). The link at the bottom of the post shows the study.

            • Bob Greene says

Thank you for your report on using “onion juice oil”. Although I am sure there is oil in onion, how did you obtain onion oil? Or did you mean only onion juice?

When you claim onion juice (oil) really works, is that personal experience, or you also referring to a study by professional researchers– ie. medical school, clinic, etc.

    • Wuluwulu says

This is onion you are talking about. There will never be a big lineup for anything to do with raw onions, especially putting it on your hair.

      • Bob Greene says

Contrary to your comment about raw onions, there is a huge “line up” for avoiding hair loss– even if that means occasionally using onions. The article frequently refers to onion juice as the most convenient method of obtaining results with hair loss and even greying of hair.

For some people, obtaining onion juice means simply crushing the particles of onions produced by a blender or simple kitchen knife. For those who want a more efficient solution, there is the juicer, a kitchen appliance specifically designed to produce juice with a minimum of debris and delay.

As for the odor of raw onions, many people do not find the smell offensive, but simply worry that others might. So, they fret about what kind of soap to use, how long to leave the onion juice in the hair, etc.

Fortunately, little of the concern about odor is warranted if the onion juice is thoroughly washed out of the hair after application. Typically, onion juice is applied and allowed to remain in the hair for a specific period, whether overnight, or for only a few hours. Then the onion juice is washed out using soap or even lemon juice, depending on best results.

Those concerned about lingering odor of onion need only reflect that the alternative of doing without onion is continued hair loss. For men around age 35 to 50, the looming prospect of developing the famous vertex bald spot (the point at top rear of the scalp from which hair normally grows outward in a swirl or whorl pattern) is a major concern. Obviously, for women, any balding matters, although they are not as prone as men to vertex balding or balding in patches.

In all cases, halting the process of balding is a matter of (cautious) experimentation. Some, like me, have experimented with even PKUS (pseudo-catalase), a white powder from which a solution of catalase is prepared for application directly to the scalp. Although I cannot claim excellent results for PKUS in halting hair loss– PKUS must be used daily, and the effect is satisfactory, but not dramatic– it does reduce the amount of odor normally present with onion juice, which is the primary reason I tried PKUS.

However, and in fairness to the onion juice users, I plan to return to the use of onion juice for myself, if only for a few weeks, in order to compare its power with PKUS in halting hair loss. During that onion juice trial, I plan to use lemon juice during the final hair rinse to remove all onion odor, if possible. If onion juice produced by my new juicer is more effective than PKUS in stopping hair loss, I may conitinue to use onion juice– especially if the lemon juice rinse works well.

    • Sandi says

I used this for almost 3 weeks and I couldn’t take it anymore. My husband, my kids, people I worked out with were so disgusted by the smell. I was like a skunk and no one wanted to be near me. Somehow that dang onion smell got entrenched in my bathroom, on my pillows & sheets, in the walls, in my car. I stopped using it for a month and I still smelled like onions. And after all that, my hair is still gray. Don’t use it for grays unless you enjoy smelling like dirty garbage.

Sandi, try using diluted lemon juice with the final rinse of your hair. That appears to be the only thing your own onion juice routine omits.

This is so interesting! When you say it “regenerates” hair follicles, is that true even if the follicle has already died, such as in male pattern baldness?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

From the information in the study, it included preventing hair loss and increasing hair growth, for those with male pattern baldness.

      • santosh says

        Hi Lori,

Can you post the link of the study that mentions that it can potentially cure male pattern baldness. I only see information on alopecia areata not male pattern baldness.

        Look forward to your response.

  5. says

This is the first I’ve heard of onion juice being used as a natural remedy for hair thinning or grey hair. Wow!

You mentioned a daily application. Is the daily application to be done forever or just for short periods of time, for instance, daily for a week each month, that sort of thing?

I’m very interested in the answers to the questions the other commenters have left, too, so I’ll be revisiting this to see what you’ve found out. :)

Thanks for the fascinating info. (I’m sharing this on Facebook.)

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

It is amazing and such a great natural and simple solution! The study involved using it twice daily for two months. After I started using it daily for a few weeks, it became time consuming, so I cut back to just a few times a week and have still seen great results! :)

Do you think onion juice may also help with sebaceous cysts? I have about 1/2 dozen on my scalp varying in size.

I find it strange that I have asked for a pic from various people, (including Lori, the person who started this whole onion/hair rant in here).. claiming amazing results. But guess what? I have not received “ONE RESPONSE” via my email yet. No pics. No nothing. Not even in HERE. I’ve been asking for a before and after picture since October of last year. What’s up with this? What’s the deal?
I know you have my email address Lori, because I have to include it, in order to make a comment in here.

          • Lori Klein says

I don’t have any before and after pictures because they wouldn’t do it justice. I had hair thinning and my hair is noticeably thicker to myself, but I don’t feel it shows much of a difference in photos. Hopefully, someone else with more noticeable results will contact you since you left your email address for them.

  7. tricia says

I have not tried this, but I once blended an onion in a high powered blender. My eyes burned SO bad. Probably most of the day, and possibly the next! So, be careful! It was even a small onion!

And, I would think that if you had hydrogen peroxide on your scalp your hair would just get lighter, not grey. My hair is grey (some. not all). I wish it was just lighter.

  8. Gabriel Dimayuga says

I am 32 years of age now, but I lost my hair when I turned 24. It was such an unfortunate thing for me to loose my hair. I have a head shape issue. Not too weird but somewhat, and the only thing I relied on to cover it was my long black shiny hair. Now I wear caps all of the time. it’s been hell for me. :( I have been living in a small surf town for four years that hasn’t got to see me without my hat off. I wish i could surf but that means i’d have to take my hat off and show the world my alenatic head. lol.. The funny thing is nobody mentions anything about it, but I have heard comments about it. I would’ve thought by now someone would be intrigued enough to ask me why I keep my damn hat on all of the time. I have been trying to find a solution to my problem but nothing has worked so far , and I sure don’t have the money for a hair surgery. It sucks when I am intimate with a female and she gets to find out my secret.. Although I’ve never been rejected for it.
I just wish with all of the technology we have for destruction we also had some technology to restore what we loose sometimes, even if its something that some may consider insignificant. Anyway.. I doubt this onion thing will work but ill give it a try and keep you posted

He has been through a number of treatments through his dermatologist, but for one year now there has been no improvement. Would you suggest we stop all of this treatments and try the onion juice. Please let me have your honest opinion.

Since your son is only 15, take him to a doctor. Hair loss can be from a medical condition, or in some cases stress. At his age, he should not be losing hair.

The onion juice goes bad pretty quickly, so I wouldn’t put it in shampoo, unless it was just enough for a few days to use. I keep my onion juice in the fridge and it stays good for about 4 days.

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share my experience here. I am 26 years old, I lost almost all my hairs in my top area. I got to know about this onion remedy and started using it for last one month, I must say here that it really works. Now I have hairs in all the places in my head, but all are very small and thin, But it gives me hope that I can get my hair back. I am taking the pictures and comparing it all the time. Its simply awesome.
And another thing is, I am using garlic as well, as it comes from same onion family. Both works. But one thing to be very careful, never apply too much at a time, I applied too much paste one day and got burnings in head, so I stopped using for last one week. Thank god, I used coconut oil for the one week, which healed the scars caused by burn. Now planning to continue onion and garlic from next week.

But, I must admit that it really works. If anybody wants to see before and after pictures, please let me know, as there is no way to attach here.

I started using it two weeks ago and it really eradicated the whole feeling of scratching and itching on my scalp.
My scalp is now much calmer and I have no urge to scratch my hair at all.
As for the hair, i feel its quite shiny and fluffy.
I can not comment on gray hair changing to natural colour after such short period of time
I used Alpecin for almost a year to cool down my scalp, energize and strengthen the hair and get rid of the itching feeling but it was not anywhere near the effect of onion juice.
I strongly recommend it to everyone.
The only draw back is the very strong odor .
Last night my wife asked me very politely to sleep on the couch !!??

i agree with parham.. I used onion on scalp for about 6 months daily..i got rid of the itch on the scalp, hair loss also reduced greatly and they became thicker as well..that said i went for a hair cut one fine day and the moment the guy applied water on my hair the smell killed everyone in the room.. Being embarassed would be an understatement..i gradually stopped using the juice on scalp, and here m now with accelerated hair fall and a lot of itch..i plan to start applying it again.. I read somewhere that apple cider vinegar makes the smell go i hope it does..

I’ve recently shaved my head after not cutting it at all for about two years. I noticed that I lost a lot of hair when brushing and showering, but that was pretty much common as in a prior time I let my hair grow long.
Now, closing in to my mid-forties, I’ve started to get “worried” and not (or something like that) after shaving and, it may be in my mind, I’ve felt that there’s space between hairs, because I think I see more light reflecting from the top front of my head. I don’t have that round spot at all at the top like many men get or friars shave of, but the front part sure seems to reflect a bit more light than I remember from the last time.
I’ve asked my parents and friends to tell me if I’m losing my hair and 99% say no, the other !% say maybe, that they can’t remember me with such short hair (now looks like a buzz cut). I want to believe that it may be the way the light shines and that because my wavy hair is stricken by cowlicks the light may not stop and go straight to my scalp.
My hair has stopped falling after cutting/shaving it. Maybe the weight was too much for my scalp to stand.
Anyways… that’s the story as best as I can explain it and hopefully you can help me out figure out how to reverse my apparent hair loss.
Best wishes and hope to hear from you.

The smell is powerful, but it’s really not the bad and it only smells for the 1 hour you have it on.

  22. Vanny says

Hi can i know in a week how many days i must apply it ??and every time when i apply it after one hour i must wash my hair??

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

In the study the participants used it daily. I started out using it daily, but then decreased it to only a few times per week or sometimes 1 time per week and still saw great results. I wash it out after because it eliminates the smell and my hair became stiff when it’s in.

  23. Scott says

Ive been using 90% onion / 10% garlic mix , blendered with a little water – to avoid having to make it daily , i freeze it , and when i need a little , defrost a small portion , its quick and easy , less hassel . Since using it for about 3 weeks , not every day , about 3 x a week , ive noticed my hair feels thicker / fuller , looks healthier , feels healthier , its still early days so we will see how it goes , but loving this stuff , its a great alternative to using normal shampoos , my hair has honestly never looked and felt so good . I do use normal shampoo about 2-3x a week , just to cleanse the hair , which i think is importnant and helps with the onion smell as well .. but i think to much is been made aboout the smell , if you get into a routine , its quick , and the smell is actually not that bad , the feel that the onion garlic mix is giving me is super , so thanks Lori and to everyone who has commented , so far its been life changing for me ..

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I wash it after about an hour to get rid of the smell and my hair becomes stiff from the onion too.

The only side effect that your hair and bedroom would smell like shit, but to tell the result would be great if you apply the juice for 7-8 hours..

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I would start out using it for a shorter time first to make sure don’t have a reaction or are allergic to it. It is quite powerful. I like to wash it off after an hour to get rid of the smell and it also makes my hair very stiff.

I tried the onion juice once 5 weeks ago, as I have grey hair that has started to thin. I found afterwards that every time I perspired all I could smell was onions. This odour lasted for 4 weeks, even with shampooing vigorously. Any solutions to this would be appreciated.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

After I washed my hair, sometimes I still felt like I smelled of onion. You could try watering down the mixture to see if that helps.

        Hello Sandeep,

I don’t have pics to compare as its only twenty days so far,but my hair stopped falling in just a week after using this therapy, magically.I want to continue for two months as I’ve read that people have got new hair growth if used for two months, daily.
I think main reasons behind hair fall are stress, illness,no healthy diet,no hair care, rigorous hair treatment, harsh shampoos, exposure to sun light, hard water, these things damage our hair.So keeping these reasons in mind if we care of ourselves,we can combat hair fall.
And I guess onion juice will stop hair fall once but if we don’t care other things then it may occur again.
So my suggestion to you is that you should also try onion juice without delay with a belief that it will help and forget all the stress,at least of hair fall, put on cap when in sun, take proper diet. And yes,I have sacrificed all fancy shampoos and conditioners that promise to stop hair fall and have switched to herbal shampoo and later a leave on serum.
While making onion juice I add coriander leaves and soaked and then boiled green tea leaves with its brown liquid, few drops of lemon juice. But initially only raw onion juice helped me a lot.You can try with onions only.

Hope my experience help you little.

        Thanks and regards,

I have just started to use the onion Juice. but My hair is falling as soon as I put onion juice.is it natural?. I am using the red onion juice? is that ok? or I have to change to white onion…

please advise and also how often should I use?????

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

In the study participants used it 2 times a day for 6 weeks. I started out using it daily and then cut back to once a week and still saw good results. It is quite powerful so some may want to start out diluting it. I used white onion but I don’t believe the study mentioned which type they used. Both types of onions have pretty similar amounts of antioxidants.

  33. Divina says

    Lori dear,

I have the onion juice for a a week. It strengthened the hair root I guess, the loss hair is reducing significantly after 3 days of usage. Is 6 weeks is enough for the therapy? Can I stop using it afterward at all? Because I can not stand the smell, I apply it daily at night and wash it 3 times to clean the smell. It’s seems the onion aroma is everywhere of my body and I need to change my pillow cover daily.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

That is great you have already seen results! Thank you for taking the time to share your results. In the study it mentioned they did use it daily for 6 weeks. The smell is powerful! I’m not sure how often it would need to be used to keep up with the results. I have been trying to do it at least every few weeks now and am still seeing results.

The study only mentioned reversing grey and increasing hair growth; however, I believe the causes of grey and white hair both have the factor of a buildup of catalase. Hopefully someone will be able to comment with their results.

      • Bob Greene says

In your August 21, 2013, reply to “Bharat” (who said, “did, it work for white hair problem too. I had lots of white and keep on turning my lots of black hair white day by day. So, i am waiting for you people opinion lori that it will work for my white problem to turn them black again”), you said, “The study only mentioned reversing grey and increasing hair growth; however, I believe the causes of grey and white hair both have the factor of a buildup of catalase…”

This statement may have confused readers who read the study and concluded buildup in the hair follicles of hydrogen peroxide is the cause of reduced hair growth and greying. In fact, since catalase reduces H2O2, it is a chemical antagonist of peroxide. Did you mean H2O2, when you referred to a “buildup of catalase”?

  36. says

did onion juice work for turning white hair to blac hair. I am looking for sooner response from your side lori, waiting to find solution for this problem from longtime.
Hope, you will answer my query soon

    • Bob Greene says

The original news flurry about catalase as a means to restore hair color in victims of the disease Virtiligo is what drew the attention of many to the time-honored use of onion juice, which also contains catalase. In fact, the use of onion catalase for falling hair and greying is almost the entire focus of Lori’s blog and reader response on the subject.

However, since onion catalase has an odor problem, its effect can be duplicated without odor by application of synthetic catalase, or PC(KUS). This substance can be purchased in powder form, mixed with water, combed through the hair and allowed to remain all day without a significant odor, according to one who has used it. Although the chemical activity of synthetic catalase depends to some extent on exposure to ultraviolet radiation (sunshine), there are reports PC(KUS) works without sunshine, but to a lesser degree.

Therapeutic use of catalase appears based on the reduction of peroxide in and around the hair follicle. According to one theory, peroxide reduction or removal permits melanocytes actually to migrate back into the hair follicle, restoring color. By the same principle, peroxide reduction may allow resumption of hair follicle activity, even in “dead” follicles in balding areas.

However, people with a diagnosed case of Virtiligo should consult a dermatologist, since the disease is more complex than an overaccumulation of peroxides. Although the news about use of catalase to “cure” Virtiligo is a sign of progress in medical research, the disease is also linked to endocrine disorders and autoimmune disease. Such conditions include hyperthyroidism and adrenocortical insufficiency. Since hormones are not something to experiment with casually, a licensed medical practicioner is always the starting point.

For most catalase users, the question is how to refine use of catalase, maximizing removal of peroxides and promoting healthy hair follicles and regrowth of natural hair color.

I’m 41. I first heard about using onion to treat alopecia in 2005. I never really had the gut to use it for obvious reasons. But now since my hair is not only falling out it is also noticeably thinning. Anyway I started using onion juice on July 6, 2013 every day twice a day with the exception of a few days and every now and then I would come to this web site to look for any positive results. I’ve taken quite a lot of pics and I analyse them. Sometimes I feel like I can see some differences most of the time I don’t. I was very excited and hopeful when I first started, especially after reading some of the comments ppl have written on this web site. Seeing results after two weeks or six weeks and so on. As for me I think I may have good results it may not be very noticeable, nonetheless I have some pics that I can share with you all should any of you be interested.

I look forward to sharing my pics and getting feedback if possible.

    Hi Lori,

I am facing lots of health related issues and hair thinning and hair all is one of them. My dermatologist checked my hairline and said it is female pattern baldness or hair entered sleep phase. No tests were done and I was prescribed hormones medication n minidoxil/ rogaine. Which I couldn’t take that time. My hair stated loosing since 2008 and now in 2013 my scalp is very weel visible. I need to cover it with my thin strands. I m having those hair cysts also so it is very embarrassing. From today I have started this Onion regimen. And will keep on posting about its effects. This blog is awesome.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

The onion juice is treating the scalp more so than the ends of your hair. So it should work, regardless of it being damaged or not.

  48. fred says

Hmmm Hydrogen peroxide, how many bald women are there, who dont use it? not many. Not many men use Bleeching agents either – YET they go bald, so, what causes men to go bald apart from too much Dihydrotestosterone (commonly abbreviated to DHT). Onions might help but Im sure more men would be rubbing their heads with onions if it truly worked…Anyway Im gonna try it :-)

    • Bob says

Onion juice works for most people, rest assured. Your only issue is dealing with the odor, and devising a convenient, effective method of application.

The NIH study Lori quotes used onion juice– that is, “natural” catalase, not a synthetic form, like PC(KUS). The Virtiligo therapy in the news used synthetic catalase, not onion juice.

This brings to mind the question, is catalase or some other substance in onion juice the source of its desirable results with hair loss? The Virtiligo study with synthetic catalase addressed hair color, not hair loss, and there was no mention of hair loss in the study.

The ultimate question– will use of only catalase, not onion juice, produce the same or better results with hair loss?

I’ve been pretty desperate for answers.

I feel for you, Aliya. It’s really sad not having the hair we would like to have.
Have you ever consulted a dermatologist?

    • Kimmie-Sue says

Hi Ailya, have you seen your doctor? also, when you used the onion juice did you keep your scalp clean? I don’t understand how Onion juice caused you pimples when it is full of sulfur and sulfur is supposed to be good for all types of skin ailments especially acne/pimples.

Have you thought about wearing wigs? I am suggesting wigs so you can stop manipulating your hair. sometimes too much manipulation can cause stress on the hair strands and in turn cause more breakage. pony tails can do a lot of harm to our hair.

I wanted to share what i’ve been doing. I am Trinidadian of East Indian and African descent. All my life i have had short hair while my siblings all had long hair.

I think i am taking after my East Indian father he is BALDING while my siblings are taking after my mother who at the age 78 is still with long beautiful hair!

to make matters worse when i was a teen; my brother and I got into a fight and he snatched a big chunk of my hair out from my edges. this was over 20 years ago and i tried everything under the sun even rogaine and nothing NOTHING grew those edges back.

It was only until i tried onion juice and garlic oil did i start to see little hairs sprouting from my scalp.

i use it faithfully every night on the weekdays and twice a day on the weekends. after applying i put a plastic cap , and then a hair scarf to keep it in place and go to bed.

in the mornings, i rinse my scalp.

i would use it twice everyday but i don’t want to go to work smelling like garlic oil and onion juice.

if anyone is interested in how i make my garlic oil here is what i do.

i get fresh garlic maybe like 30 cloves and olive oil.
i put everything in a crock pot and let it cook for anywhere between 4-6 hrs. you will see that the garlic has turned dark brown almost burnt looking.

i strain the oil and place it in a dark bottle. Sometimes i leave a few pieces of garlic in the oil and then i place it in the refrigerator. I also add a few drops of tea tree oil to keep it from going rancid or whatever. I am very paranoid!!

I’ve also incorporated aloe vera gel and rosemary oil into my mixture.

i bought a spray bottle and added
      garlic oil
      rosemary oil
Lily Of The Desert aloe vera gel
      onion juice

shake it up and just spray my scalp then put on my plastic cap.

I leave my spray bottle in the fridge too. I don’t want to take any chances with it possibly going bad.

      (HHG) Happy Hair Growing!

      • Kimmie-Sue says

Also another thing i meant to add. our ends are the oldest part of our hair so we MUST PROTECT THEM and try to keep them moisturized.

kindly keep updated of your status…
To apply it as regular, non-smelly oil would be very helpful….
can anyone suggest–how to kill the smell & apply it like regular oil?

        • Kimmie-Sue says

Hello, my edges are growing in nicely. Have you tried adding pure essential oils , like lavender , peppermint or rosemary ? All 3 are good for stimulating hair growth. Why don’t you get an applicator bottle add some olive oil or aloe vera juice/gel with the essential oils that i mentioned with your onion juice. That way the applicator will direct the mixture directly onto your scalp and you can just massage it in.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

Hi Aliya, sorry to hear the onion juice did not work for you. When I first started using it full strength, I broke out in a rash. Then, I diluted the mixture with water and was able to keep using it. For some, it may be more tolerable if used diluted.

  51. Neo says

I’ve been using the onion juice daily on my scalp for 10 days now. Ofcause its too early to see the difference in hair growth, but is my scalp supposed to be so sensitive. If i even touch it if feels like i need to put ice on it, and this is long after i’ve washed. It also itches like crazy. Is this normal?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

When I applied the onion juice full strength, it also caused my scalp to be itchy. So I diluted the mixture with some water. But, you may want to check if you’re allergic to it.

  52. says

This really helps me. According to the experts on average, we lose fifty to a hundred hairs a day, which is said that’s a normal cycle. One thing that could scare me is that hair loss may be a sign of a more serious medical condition that needs an evaluation by a dermatologist and possible treatment.

  53. says

i m using onion juice regular from six months but nw i also face hair fall daily….. i m appying onion juice over night and in morning i only wash with water not shampoo… tell me is i m right

    • Kimmie-Sue says

Hello, are you putting the juice on your hair or scalp? If applying the juice to your hair, the hair will sometimes become stiff and hard and if you COMB your hair in that condition your hair will probably break.

I don’t know if this is the case with you but if you aren’t doing so try applying the juice directly on your scalp and NOT the hair.

    • Kimmie-Sue says

      Hello friend,

guess what i experienced this weekend? excessive shedding. Normally i try to put the onion juice directly on my scalp but last week i went trigger happy and sprayed it all over my hair! So when i went to wash my hair this weekend to my horror hair was everywhere. I gained length but the shedding seemed abnormal and SCARY.

i came across this comment on a hair forum

“Do you apply the topical sulfur to the hair shaft or to the scalp? If you apply sulfur to the hair shaft it can really dry it out, so that is to be avoided. Keep in mind that sulfur is what dries pimples out in some over the counter medications, so imagine what it could do to the hair shaft…”

so, considering that onions are sulfur. I am thinking that i did sulfur overload and that too much of it will cause breakage!!! ugh!!!!!!

I don’t know if this is the cause of my shedding or your hair lost but it’s something to think about.

If you have significant hair loss, you may benefit from a doctor’s (dermatologist’s) close examination of your scalp and other vital signs. Only a doctor can test to help identify what may be wrong.

Hair is an acutely sensitive indicator of chemicals, radiation, hormones and a variety of other factors. Because of that sensitivity, your hair can be analyzed for your general nutritional status, so any deficiencies are usually revealed.

Hey all, I am now trying this as I’m very thin on top, apart from going for a surgical hairtransplant, maybe this will help also keep what Ive got. I’ve researched surgeons and the best so far in Europe that i have discovered are Dr Hakan Doganay and the Farjo team in UK. I’ve already had some hair procedure transplants 18 years ago, but new techniques are much better for us balding men, in fact even some women are having procedures these days with the ultra fine FUE technique and with a high quality surgeon results can be excellent. Nothing replaces, what we had when young, but some of us MEN lose hair and also have to cope with it.

I’m using onion and honey currently for 30mins ad ay minimum and then washing my hair with same onion and honey mix, then I rinse with a natural shampoo, its only been 2 weeks but there could be potential in this so I will try it for 6 months and see.

  55. Mun says

I gave up using onion juice on my hair every day because of the onion dandruff… I used to apply it leave it overnight and then wash my hair in the morning in the shower before I go to work. Main reason why I gave up using it daily it’s because of the onion dandruff it gets on my hair even if I wash it thorougly. The smell is unpleasant but nothing I can’t bear and I have no boyfriend. It’s those tiny onion particles that are truly a no-no.
After using it for 2 months I have noticed that a lot of my hair fell off initially but now I see some new hairs but nothing really significant. But it surely fights grey hair, that is a resounding yes in my case. I will keep it using every now and then… specially at weekends because I don’t go out. And if you have dandruff… onion juice will take care of it and fast. Your hair or what’s left of it will shine =)
Genetics plays a part on hair growth and also diet, life habits and nervous system.
As to the first one there’s nothing we can do about it. As to diet, I don’t eat meat, I take vitamine C and magnesium and also hair pills (Iennov brand) with good results.

I wish you all the best in your efforts because I do know how it feels not having good hair.

Glad to hear it helped with greys! I’ve noticed that using coconut oil as a deep conditioner helps to prevent the dandruff.

Really good article. am very desperate to re-grow my hair. but i have a bunch of questions. please help! can i use the small pink( i mean shallots) onion’s juice? also can i make the juice and store it for the next 1 week or should i prepare it fresh every time? also please advise on how much juice to apply each time and whether i should apply from the root of the hair till the end or just the scalp?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I used the red onions, the study didn’t specify which type of onion they used. I kept mine in the fridge for a day or two, I don’t think it lasted much longer than that. I only applied to my scalp and massaged it in.

  59. Arvin says

    Hi Lori

Thank you for this informative post. My hair is 50% grey since i was 17. I started using some dye at age 24. Now I’m 36. I want to stop using chemicals and go natural. Searching the internet i found the black walnut dye post by you and from there i got to this post.

For the onion juice treatment, is it okay if i have my hair dyed with the black walnut dye? Or should i wait till the dye wears out and then i start the onion juice treatment? I’m thinking that the onion juice is going to work on the roots rather than the hair itself right? So, i hope it should be okay to start the onion juice treatment while the black walnut dye is still fresh on my hair.

What are your views on this?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

Hi Arvin, I used them both together. I apply the onion juice right to my scalp and massage it in. I waited a few days after I did the walnut hair dye and it didn’t seem to affect the color. Hope this helps!

I remember putting chicken livers in a blender for several minutes in Biology lab to ‘whip the catalase’ out of them. I wonder if blended chicken livers would work for hair loss/graying too.

    • Bob Greene says

Even you would be surprised at what people apply to their skin and scalp for remedies.

However, applying organ tissue from dead chickens is not the most sterile way to obtain catalase. You may get more than you expected from your application.

Pseudo-catalase (P-KUS) is often sold as twin bags of white powdery ingredients, to be mixed 1-to-1 in the amount of solution desired. The PKUS powder mixes easily into 400ml of distilled water, and can be kept in the refrigerator for weeks, applied at a few drops per day and gently rubbed into the balding areas of the scalp.

When applying the solution, all you need do is cover the skin surface fully, and gently rub to promote circulation. Avoid strong pressure, tugging and scrubbing which can damage the hair shaft.

  62. Laurel says

Interesting. So if it’s helping also with white/gray hair it must be effecting the keratin . My hair has been thinner since an intense treatment of steroids years ago. It would be nice to reverse that process. I’ll give it a try, if my husband can stand the smell of my onion head.

  63. Ashes says

I am interested in using this for hair loss but have just started no-poo. I know the baking soda causes alkaline changes in the scalp…how do you think the properties of the onion juice would affect this method? Or vice-versa? What do you use to wash in between onion rinses?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I switched to using castile soap as a shampoo because the baking soda wasn’t able to remove the onion (smell) enough. I leave the onion juice on for about an hour and then wash it out with castile soap after.

Hi, the study linked above showed very good results. I’ve also tried it, and within a few weeks I noticed a significant improvement in hair loss. Many others who have commented above have had good results as well. :)

    Thanks Lori for the article.

Describing my hair loss. I started to see my scalp especially if there is a light over my head, and it is noticeable. Thinning hair on the side of the hair and also the middle, so I always keep my hair little long on the top but it shows that I have less hair and looks so ugly with a long hair”2inches”
I decided to shave my head, so I did. it looked a great like a military man, but I was afraid the thin hair won’t grow back. my friends suggested to shave it so it will be easy to apply castor oil on it. So, one night, I shaved my own hair to 3 mm, and to my surprise, I didn’t look bold at all lol, instead my head looked well and since then, I started using Black Jamaican castor oil and also Virgin hair fertilizer which is very cheap to buy a Dollar store which cost me only few backs. So I started seeing good results, and 2 weeks ago, I started using ONIONS every night, just rubbing a piece of it to my scalp, and I also use GARLIC twice a week bc of the strong odor. Results? I can’t be happier than ever. I started to see thickening of my thing hair, and I also see in the front and sides new follicle growing back, lots of them. I shave my hair on the sides, and let the top to 3 mm at the most which helped me a lot of using this products.
My scalp doesn’t itch, no side affects since I love onions and garlic in food anyways.

Lori, thanks a lot for your article, and I will also suggest to people visiting this site to do some research to enforce what Lori posted here. There are lots of people using ONIONS and GARLIC for hair loss. Go to youtube, and research onions and garlic for hair loss, and also CASTOR OIL, I use black Jamaican which I bought from dollar store also for few backs and it lasts for a month.

Results are very positive in my case, so don’t get discouraged by few anonymous people that didn’t work for. Hair doctors and dermatologists won’t suggest to us to use onions on your hair so they can be out of business lol. Good luck to you all.

Hi Syed, according to the study it works best when applied topically. I juice one onion at a time and keep it in the fridge for the next day. I apply it to my scalp and massage it in, then wash it out after an hour or two with shampoo. Hope this helps!

I’m in my early 40s and struggled with hair loss since my early teens. About a month ago, I tried the onion scalp treatment using a yellow onion. I left it on overnight and washed my hair in the morning. The smell is strong but definitely tolerable. My hair felt lighter and had more volume after the first day. Two nights later, I repeated the treatment. Days after the second treatment, I noticed less hair falling from my scalp after I styled my hair. I’ve continued this treatment twice a week for the last 4 weeks. I used to run my fingers through my hair and feel multiple strands coming out of my head but if I do it now I don’t lose as many hairs. And after about only eight times of using this scalp treatment, my hair feels great and looks healthier. I think part of the reason is feels thicker is because the rate of loss has decreased. Surprisingly, my kids have even commented. They say it looks like I have more hair and they cannot see my scalp like before. They also said my hair looks darker. I’m so glad I came across this home remedy! It’s natural, cheap and seems to work. ( Since I do keep it on overnight, sometimes I can smell the onion if I perspire the next day. But, like I said, I can deal with the smell if I can get my hair back.) I’m going to try using red onions this month. I hope it works for all of you out there.

According to the study, they used it 2 times a day for 6 weeks. I used it every day for a few weeks and then cut back to once a week. I saw results in a few weeks, but it may take longer for others.

  78. Lisa says

Hi, Lori. I’d love to try the onion juice on my scalp. But, I have a silly question. Is it safe for everyone to use them? I’m concerned because I’m in Malaysia and it is quite a warm place. I thought the onion is hot and it might irritate my scalp? If it is safe, I can’t wait to try it!

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

Hi Lisa, the onion juice can be quite powerful, you may want to try a small amount on just a section of your scalp to make sure you aren’t allergic to it.

  79. sujithra says

shall i apply the onion juice to the scalp, where the coconut oil is already applied (or) do i want to apply onion juice in the washed hair… bcoz, my doubt is whether the coconut oil and onion juice undergo any reaction…..

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I don’t think there would be a reaction, but if there is coconut oil on, it may prevent the onion juice from reaching or fully absorbing into the scalp.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I apply it and leave it on for about an hour and then wash it out. I didn’t see improvements for at least 4 to 6 weeks, as did those in the study, so it may be too soon to tell.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

I would apply it to a dry scalp rather than when oil is on because the oil may prevent the onion juice from reaching the scalp and being absorbed.

Hello, I posted on October 25th and it’s been a month and 1 days. I am still using onions everyday except I missed few days on purpose to let my scalp get air. I also massage my scalp with castor oil almost everyday and leave it all day. I shave my head almost every week which helps to massage my scalp with onion juice. I do it before bed and I keep it all night every night without any problems. When I get a pimple, it is because hair is stuck there, that’s all.
I do have before and after picture. You will see a huge difference. Hair growing and thickening but a lots of new baby hair growing on the front sides.
By the way, I do take a piece of onions, and I scrub my scalp directly, which left some empty spots, but those spots se growing new hair and it is thickening. I may say, I used the onions for about 3 months, and results? I let some of you judge it.
If you want to see before and after, please post ur email, and I will send the pics to help you ladies and gentleman gain some confidence.
One thing I will say, I am not allergic to onions and nobody ever smelled it while at work. Good luck all.

Can I dilute the onion juice with aloe Vera gel? Or with oil like coconut/olive /castor oil…which combo would be good?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

For the first time, I would only use a small amount a teaspoon or so to make sure you’re not allergic to it. After a few times, I then increased it to about 1/4 to 1/2 cup and applied it over my whole scalp.

  87. whosurfriend says

I started this evening using the onion, my question is I also use the Bosley Shampoo and conditioner, is it wise to use the conditioner everyday and your saying we should use the onion twice a day, isn’t that a little excessive with shampoo and conditioning so much. I’ve always heard we shouldn’t shampoo everyday. I am excited to see if this works, is there a way to post before and after pics..you’ve been asked by several and yet no response.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

The study involved having participants use it 2 times a day, but it became too time consuming for me. So I started out using it daily for a week or two and then used it only once a week after that.

I think the onions are most powerful when used raw, the participants in the study applied raw onion juice.

I love your website. I’m going to try the onion. I have also read (what do you think Lori) you can finely chop a half an onion and let steep in your shampoo bottle for two weeks.
Also with your recipe on applying it to the scalp as straight juice how often per week? Thanks

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

Thanks Claudia! Sounds like a good idea; however, it might be more powerful when used raw. In the study they used it twice daily, but I cut back to once a week and still had good results.

  91. dave says

Is there any way of getting rid of the smell of onion juice?
I left it on overnight, and washed it out in the morning with shampoo and conditioner.
i could still smell the onions, mostly when i worked out later in the day and started sweating. Its a bit embarrassing to smell like onions. I washed my hair thoroughly so im not sure what to do; i also dont know if its a good idea to shampoo and condition your hair every day. is there any alternatives that will help the smell come off? essential oils seem to hide the smell a bit.

thanks lori for the article; im fairly confident the onion juice will work. im still pretty young and i think i can regain some of the hair ive lost.

    • dave says

oh also, what is your opinion on refrigerating or freezing the onion juice?
its a bit impractical for me to make the juice every day, as i dont have a juicer.

      • Lori, Health Extremist says

I haven’t tried freezing it, but that may be a good option. I usually put it in the fridge, but it only lasts a few days before it starts to smell like it’s going bad.

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

Hi Dave, I use castile soap with essential oils to wash my hair, so maybe that helps remove the smell more than a typical shampoo. After I wash my hair, I can still notice a slight onion smell, but it’s not too noticeable. Hope this helps.

Hey all! Been searching for MONTHS for a hair loss/regrowth remedy, so glad I stumbled onto this thread! I’ve been reading a lot about Onion Juice and whatnot, and thought from reading some of these posts, I’d give it a try! Just finished up an hour with a tiny bit on my scalp (to test for reactions on my skin). NONE! So tomorrow I will be using this to cover my entire head and do it every other day if I can! :) I have a receding widow’s peak (my dad’s side) and very fine/thin hair (mom’s side) and, as an actor, a full head of head definitely extends my career’s length, and helps branch out to different looks/roles! So I hope in coming months, I really see some results!

Just a quick question – After everyone is leaving the juice concoctions in on their scalps, what is everyone washing it out with? Water? Special Shampoos? Apple Cider Vinegar+Water? .. I’m curious to know from the success stories, so I can have the best chance at regrowth in throughout my entire scalp and balding hairlines!

    Thanks! :)

    Aaron, 22yrs.

Hey! Ive been using this for the past 3 weeks now, and i usually wash it out with a Dr. Organic Vitamin E shampoo twice with only a little more than a capsize each time :) i use it twice only so i can get most of the onion out, but i dont use alot since it can dry the hair out. Remember to use a nice, moisturizing conditioner afterwards since its really drying ! 😀

email me at alnaria@gmail.com if you want any tips on making the onion more effective, since it would take me ages to type on here lollll hope this works for you !!

best way to avoid the smell put something on your nose until you wash your hair breath from your mouth in that way it will not smell.

Thanks for writing this article. I’ve been reading blogs about hair loss and hair growth treatment to make a conclusion about the real treatment. Nice post very helpful.

Hi I m getting white hair and i am just 25.Suddenly they have started showing up.
Is the Onion gonna transform them into black again?

    • Lori, Health Extremist says

The study mentioned reversing grey hair, but I’m not sure if it would have a similar effect on white hair.

  101. says

Wow! It’s nice to know that aside from being good to our body, onion juice is also a big help in treating thinning and greying hair. Very nice of you to share this post. Thank you.

This sounds interesting. However, I noticed that there is no reference as to how this would affect color treated hair. It’s disappointing that the majority of posts on remedies for hair loss do not address this and I always send an email to the bloggers requesting this information and not one has replied. Hopefully I will receive a response.

Hi there, the study did not mention anything about color treated hair. However, since the onion juice is primarily massaged into the scalp and not on the hair itself, I don’t think it would have any affect on the color. My mom uses the onion juice occasionally with color treated hair and it hasn’t caused any discoloration.

Nice post. Yes onion juice works great for treating hair loss, you can also apply ginger/garlic juices too. It can be good to add honey/lemon juice to the juice for more nutrients. Try to have more vegetables, dark green leafy veggies, nuts, dairy products to get sufficient proteins, fatty acids. Healthy diet always makes your skin, hair and body fit n active.

Well it’s been just over 2 months and I have been doing it 5 days a wk all though I missed 1 week, results so far it is working but slowly I still have patches but I’m not losing faith I will keep at it. I wash my hair twice in morning then massage ginger juice into scalp for about 20 mins then rinse it out and use conditioner, and boy does my scalp hot up in shower, I do think the ginger juice as well is helping. I think mine will be a long journey as I do have lots of patches but I will put up with the juices for a yr if I have to. Wish everyone good luck

Do I have to make the onion juice everyday? Could I make a batch that would last about a week, or would it lose its potency?

    Thank you.

    • Lori Klein says

I make enough to last a few days and store it in the refrigerator, this is what they did in the study as well.

  106. Nasir says

after applying the onion juice on the scalp for around 45-60 minutes, do I have to shampoo my hair every time for rinsing ? or only use water for the rinsing part?

  107. Frank Underwood says

Lori, does this work for everyone? Hair lost in the temple region regrows? How long will it take to see positive results if it’s done around 5 times a week?

    Please respond.
    Thank you.

    • Lori Klein says

Many have seen great results, you can check out the comments above to see how it worked for others. In the study, they used it twice daily and saw an improvement starting at 4 weeks.

  108. Anisha says

Hi I was wondering if you could juice a few onion and refrigerate it to use throughout the week… Will the affects be the same ?

    • Lori Klein says

The participants in the study kept it in the fridge and continue to use it throughout the week. This is what I do as well. It’s too time consuming to have to do it every day.

I have been experiencing hair fall issues forever now. I have visited various doctors but nothing seem to be working. Now I am also experiencing grey hair. Almost 40% of my hair is grey. I am 31 and yes I do believe the root cause of my problem is stress. I eat healthy and work out and sleep at least 8 hours. I still wonder why my hair is so lifeless.

I have started applying onion Juice since 2 weeks. I haven’t got any result as of now. Hoping I would see some result considering most of you guys have.

Any further suggestion is much appreciated.

    • Lori Klein says

Most participants didn’t see results until 4 to 6 weeks, so it may take longer to see results. Hope it works for you!

It is only pure onion juice, just be sure to do a patch test first to make sure you’re not allergic to it.

Im also experiencing hair loss from hair treatment ( too much peroxide ) last saturday. is it too soon to apply onion juice now? Im so scared as my hair is still coming out in little pieces and my thick hair is now so thin. please help me

    • Bob Greene says

Saldi, it is known that fresh onion juice does stop hair from falling out. The real problem, however, is not only to stop the hair fall, but to identify why the hair falls.
First, hormones have a lot to do with hair follicle activity. Since you have not identified anything about yourself, I can only suggest you have a blood test made to determine whether your hormones are at appropriate levels. Any doctor can draw the blood sample and interpret the results for you. Stress hormone levels also will appear in your lab results, and address any concern about stress.
Second, stop use of peroxide-based hair products, and observe the results over several weeks.
Catalase helps neutralize or buffer the H2O2 in your hair follicles. If you are older, your follicles will have accumulated a certain amount of H2O2, and if younger, the peroxide may add enough to your follicles that they resemble the hair follicles of an older person. Either way, administration of natural catalase-containing onion juice, or synthetic (pseudo) catalase (PCKUS) may help dramatically to halt the hair loss.
Lori Klein claims catalase helps with both hair loss / regrowth and greying. I have confirmed reduction of hair loss, but have no information yet about either regrowth or greying.
So far, my daily application of catalase through onion juice has halted my hair loss dramatically after only one week. The loss was hardly reduced on the first day, but slightly fewer hairs appeared in the shower drain filter each day thereafter. Today, no hair appeared in the shower drain, and I concluded there is something to catalase, after all.
My routine is to leave the juice on all night, and shower it off the next morning. Usually, two shampoos will remove most of the odor, and there may be better methods for odor removal. Lori Klein claims vinegar works well for her.
If you buy PCKUS, instead of using onion juice as your source of fresh catalase, be sure to avoid using DMSO as an aid to application. A manufacturer of PCKUS informed me DMSO may introduce toxic levels of manganese in the follicles and scalp.

    Hi Lori

Does applying onion on your hair will lighten the colour of your hair or will ir remain same.

I am 31 years old, Im also experiencing hair loss problem I was using lot of different types of oil and shampoo but no use , I will be going to use this but I have some doubt :
    1) we have to use every day or once or twice a week is enough?
    2) only onion juice or add any oil as i have dry hair so washing daily will make it more dry.
3)Does applying onion on your scalp will lighten the hair colour or will it remain same.
I have black hair and i have read somewhere that adding sesame oil with onion juice will prevent the color lightening caused by onions.

please give the answer and help me.

    • Lori Klein says

It has not lightened my hair or changed the color at all. In the study, the participants used it 2 times a day, but I still saw good results using it every few days. The onion hasn’t made my hair dry, I use only pure onion juice.

  115. Shiz says

Could I use both onion juice and coconut oil together as a treatment? What would that look like? Would I alternate between the two? Please advise!
