I’m back to using my favorite natural home spa treatment, a bentonite clay mask and I’m loving it! Several years ago, I don’t remember why, I stopped using it. But, when I was in the health food store last week, it caught my eye and I picked up a new jar of bentonite clay powder. I’m so glad I did!
Just after one use of the bentonite clay mask, my skin felt super clean and refreshed!
Bentonite clay is very effective and beneficial for your skin no matter what your age. What’s special about the bentonite clay mask is that it draws out toxins from the skin, shrinks your pores (noticeably just after a few uses), prevents breakouts, and leaves your skin soft and smooth.
One other benefit that I’ve noticed from using it is that it is also exfoliating. It has noticeably reduced the red marks and discoloration on my skin.
Since I started using the bentonite clay mask, I now apply it every day in the morning and leave it on while I do my oil pulling and dry brushing. My skin has never looked better!
What is Bentonite Clay?
Bentonite clay is a natural healing clay comprised of minerals and it’s formed from natural volcanic ash, which was originally discovered near Fort Benton, Wyoming. It’s very powerful and produces a negative electric charge when water is added to it, which aids in binding and removing toxins. When you mix water with the clay, the components alter in order to allow it to become a powerful tool to absorb toxins. This clay is commonly used for removing toxins, not only externally on your skin, but it can also work internally, something that many do. So, yes it is safe to consume if you have a good quality bentonite clay. You can use it both internally and externally. Another benefit of the clay is that it is commonly used to remove heavy metals from the body.
When used externally, you can apply it to any area of your body, such as your face or feet. Some even apply it to their whole body and take a bentonite clay bath. I don’t have any experience with using the clay internally, but many people say it helps digestive problems such as acid reflux.
Minerals are abundant in healing clays, like bentonite clay, including; iron, magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium, and this results in the addition of many nutrients to the body.
Where to Get Bentonite Clay:
There are two types of bentonite clay you can choose from, either sodium (sodium bentonite clay) or calcium (calcium bentonite clay). But, some contain a combination of both, depending on the brand you buy. Typically, sodium bentonite clay is used for detoxing as it’s able to draw out more toxins and calcium bentonite is often used for more remineralizing purposes.
Before I knew about the different types of bentonite clay, I bought this jar based solely on the amazing reviews. Luckily, I had such great results with it, I must have made a good choice. If you want to try it, this is the one I’m still happily using. It contains calcium bentonite clay. Since it is working so well, I am going to stick with it!
Benefits of a Bentonite Clay Mask:
There are so many benefits of using bentonite clay, but I just wanted to focus on the amazing benefits you’ll get by applying this mask!
- Heals and regenerates skin tissue
- Draws out toxins
- Treats acne (prevents breakouts and helps clear up acne)
- Unclogs and shrinks pores
- Prevents blackheads
- Reduces appearance of scars
- Excellent natural exfoliator
- Evens out skin tone
- Leaves skin feeling softer
- Leaves your face glowing!
How Often Should You Use the Bentonite Clay Mask?
I apply the bentonite clay mask daily and leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes, which is probably longer than most leave it on, but it has been working great for me doing it this way. I’ve noticed such a great improvement in my skin in just a week of using it daily!
Many use the mask just a few times a week or once a week and have great results. But, if it’s your first time applying a bentonite clay mask, I would start out with doing it once a week and see how your skin responds, as it is quite powerful and this way you can work your way up to using it daily!
Ingredients/What You’ll Need:
- 1 teaspoon bentonite clay
- 1 teaspoon water or apple cider vinegar
- Optional: a cup or bowl and a spoon to mix them
*If you use a spoon to mix them, make sure it isn’t metal because this causes metals to leach from the spoon into the clay, making the clay not as effective.
Directions:
1. Take about 1 teaspoon of the bentonite clay powder and about 1 teaspoon of water or apple cider vinegar (ACV) and put it in a bowl or cup. Since, I do this mask daily and want to do it as quickly as possible, I usually just put the teaspoon of powder in my hand and then hold my hand under the faucet to add the water to the clay and mix it with my fingers.
Note: You can use water or ACV as a liquid for the mask. The ACV tends to make the mask a little more powerful/harsh on your skin, so if you have sensitive skin you may want to use water (which is what I use).
2. Mix the two ingredients well, until it forms a paste consistency. You can add a little more water or a little more powder, if the consistency doesn’t seem like it will easily spread on your face.
3. Apply the bentonite clay mask to your face. Some people also spread it down their neck and upper chest, too. I use my fingers, but a cotton ball or cosmetic sponge also works great.
4. Leave the mask on for about 20 to 30 minutes. I apply it fairly thick and it does take about 15 minutes to just dry. As the mask dries, your face will start to feel tight.
5. Rinse off the mask using just water. You may have to gently scrub a little with your fingers to get it off. It tends to try to stick to your skin.
After you rinse the mask off, your skin may look a little pink for a few minutes. This usually happens to everyone after using the mask because the clay increases blood flow to your face as it pulls out toxins.
For Those with Sensitive Skin:
If you have sensitive skin, apply a thinner layer and leave the mask on for a shorter time. Then increase the frequency and how long you leave it on depending on how your skin feels.

Absolutely love clay masks with Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay 100% Natural Calcium bentonite clay and ACV. I try to use 2 x week and have had incredible results. I also use Redmond Clay ( another type of bentonite clay) for internal uses. I drink clay water daily and make my toothpaste with it. I have felt an incredible difference over all. WARNING!!! You can detox too much! Be careful of going overboard with “more will do me better”, it will not and you will feel many negative side effects, such as fatigue, headaches, aches. Some may say that is the detoxification part however I can confirm that “Go Big or Go Home” should not be used with Clay.
Lori
Thanks Camilla! Great points 🙂
Sue
I used 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water and ohhh geeeeesh….my face is still burning after 10 minutes of the mask being off. It was only on for 7 minutes before I had to remove it. I guess I should have read the other comments and done a test spot.
If you haven’t tried this but plan to……for sure do a test spot!
Lori
Next time you may want to try just doing the water with no vinegar. With only water it is a lot more gentle.
Kyle
Is it recommended to use a moisturizer after applying the clay, because I do not like moisturizers. I do not like the way they feel on my skin, hence why I never use lotion.
Lori
You don’t need to. I usually do the mask before bed and then go to sleep with nothing on my face.
krs m
I thought it pulls out metal from the spoon or bowl so why would you use water from the faucet which could have a lot of minerals and metals. I’ve heard you need to use distilled water with bentonite clay for masks. I’ve been using this mask on and off, seems pretty nice for my skin.
Lori
Interesting point. I’m going to research this more.

Hi everyone. I think when using any product we have to understand that everybody’s body chemistry isn’t the same. Having said this I tried the Bentonite Clay and it’s AMAZING!! After 1 use it took a few yr’s off my face. I love using natural products to take care of natural issues. I leave it on for 30 mins, wash it off THEN to take care of the dryness I rub a thin layer of unrefined coconut oil( natural and also has therapudic properties) to moisturize the skin. My advice is to stock up while the cost is fairly low for this type of product!
Lori
So glad it’s helping you!
Beau
I’m loving dis Calcium BC mask..face looks glowy n dewy.. after masking u must tone n moisturize. D tingling n tight cracky feeling is extraordinarilly new to me..was a tad worried w redness but its ok. Expensive mask is no way near as good as dis product. I’m using it to detox internally too..? not going to b a sucker for Xpensive products anymore..I’m 50 btw..?
Lori
Glad it is working good for you.
Laurette
What effect will sesame oil together with the clay have on your skin..?
Lori
I’m not sure how mixing it with oil would work. Let us know if you try it.
KK
Been using this for years about once a month. Totally love this stuff $5.99 at health food store lasts forever. I use Aztec Secret Brand Calcium Bentonite Clay and sometimes mix with a drop of my favorite essential oil. Use it and feel your face pulsate! Thanks for a great article.
KK
P.S. fun to do w friends at the beach mixing it with salt water too. Enjoy
Lori
Glad it works great for you too!

Do you have any actual scientific evidence or sources of information that confirm if any of what you say about clay is true?
When you say clay “absorbs toxins”, specifically what toxins are you talking about? Isn’t that the job of the kidney and liver to remove toxins? And if the clay is absorbing toxins, then surely it’s absorbing other materials too, many vitamins and minerals? Or does the clay know what is bad and what is good?
mo
Gee alli quin…this is a website not a doctor’s office.
I got it on my face now and it’s drying. I had the bag of bentonite clay for about 3 months but every time I mix it with the ACV it burns. I’m glad I found this page because the water seems to be much easier for me.
Having just turned 44 this week, I”m super hopeful to eliminate acne and slow some aging 🙂 Thanks!
Alissa
from what I read This clay is suppose to have a negative charge and that helps it draw out the bad stuff.
Diana
When combined with water and left to dry on the skin as a clay mask, the clay is able to bind to bacteria and toxins living on the surface of the skin and within pores to extract these from the pours. This helps to reduce the outbreak of blemishes, alleviate redness, and also to fight allergic reactions from irritating lotions or face washes, and even helps help poison ivy.
Thanks to the clay’s special ability to act as an antibiotic treatment when applied topically to the skin, the clay can help to calm skin infections and speed up healing time of wounds, even when prescription antibiotics were not able to help solve the problem.
So it does’t draw out the ‘good stuff’ too. The clay actually does the know the difference between the good & the bad. Research it a little bit, you can learn a lot!

I like diy facial mask and now using facial mask with oatmeal, egg and apple. The recipe is very easy and effective. Ingredients: Apple, Egg Yolk, Oatmeal. Blend these 3 ingredients well. Spread the mixture all over your face. Let the mixture stay for about 20-30 minutes. Rinse it off with pure water. That’s all. You can try this recipe.
Lexus
Great article! Bentonite clay is so great for many universal reasons. If you ever get into making more natural remedy its a great additive into deodorant, and it won’t stain your clothes! Just helps to detoxe and absorbed wetness/prevent odor! My favorite mixture is bergamont Ann lime with bentionite clay in a coconot oil carrier oil to blend it all with!
Lori
Very cool, I haven’t tried it as a deodorant!
Neha
Hi Lori could u plz help me I don’t have acne but have blackheads on my face and my skin is so sensitive it gets red easily so how can I try bentonite clay on my skin to feel it much prettier than before
Lori
I would use bentonite clay with water, it is more gentle and better for sensitive skin.
Lily-Rose
Whats the recipe for the deodorant please!
Patricia
Has anyone tried this by mixing it with coconut oil, or following up with coconut oil?
Alissa
I never used it with coconut oil but i think it would be really great and moisturizing for your skin to use coconut oil after. Organic unrefined coconut oil.
Anonymous
I mix mine with carbonated mineral water and follow up with coconut oil.
Skincare Lover
How long can clay mixture last? I made a batch for my hair and I still have a good amount left over.
Lori
I probably wouldn’t keep it over a week if there’s water in the mixture.
raven
I’ve been using it a while and works great. I mix mine with acv and a little activated charcoal to make it stronger. I have mild to moderate acne at times so I use it after streaming my face and using a mild exfoliater. It has helped but honestly it wasn’t til I just recently started drinking clay water that it looks like my acne is actually clearing it. It hasn’t even been a week and my constant sometimes cystic acne around my temples and cheeks is actually getting better combined with lots of water to flush it out. Oxy powder pills are something to look into to aid in the detox too and the products you use on your skin, even if it’s not used on the face it can still possibly be a culprit to the inflammation on the face. Colonics can also be a great help with good eating and digestion habits. Hopefully this helps someone.
Lori
Great to hear it’s working for you. I’ll have to try it with activated charcoal.
Claude
I’m 45, male, use it a few times a week (redness is normal for 20-30 minutes) and EVERYBODY asks what my secret is to looking so young (some think as young as 28 – depending in lighting I suppose – but usually get early 30’s). I usually start by telling them “If I tell you I’ll have to kill you!” after they nervously giggle, I tell them, “Actually, along with tons of water, no smoking, no alcohol, gym 3-5 times per week, and eating well, I use the clay. I will say that when I use it, I lay back and allow it to dry without moving my face. When it’s dry, I then move my face around and feel it pulling and tugging at my face. Great exfoliation without having to scrub. I then re-wet my face, gently removing the residue with a soft cool/warm cloth, and IMMEDIATELY moisturise before my skin has a chance to dry. I’ve NEVER had botox or any kind of esthetic procedures, and I’m constantly asked “Who do you go to?” This stuff is great!
Lori
That’s amazing!! Thanks for sharing your secret. I hope I can say the same when I’m 45 😉
Jbear
Hey there. I just started using Aztec betonite clay. All I can say is WOW, this stuff is incredible. I always thought I had sensitive skin so I’m cautious about putting anything on my skin, but I just felt good about this product, so I put lots on lol. I’ve only used it twice and it completely took the redness out of my skin, I woke up the next morning with most of my acne completely calmed and less noticeable. I mixed it with my toner which is one part braggs apple cider vinegar and 4 parts water. So if your like me and you’ve tried LITERALLY everything for acne, give this a try, because it’s amazing. I’ll be taking before and after pics, so hopefully my skin gets better and better. Fingers crossed 😉
Lori
Yay, so glad to hear it has helped!
Joan
How do you get a smooth spreadable consistency with the benonite clay and water. I had a difficult time mixing and applying.
Lori
I add the water slowly while mixing it. It can be a little tricky to get the right consistency, but you can always add a little more water or clay to get it just right.
Arka
I just tried the Calcium bentonite variety and it did make my skin feel nicer, however, I didn’t notice any burns/tingles/etc that people report experiencing. I didn’t use any metal objects in the process but I did use distilled water to make the paste.
Lori
Thanks for sharing!
Kate
I’m also a little puzzled by all the comments about tingling and redness. I’ve used bentonite clay for about 7yrs – although I typically only use it once a week or so – and never had that, however, I’ve only ever used water to mix it. So maybe it’s the ACV that’s causing those reactions. I often add a pinch of activated charcoal and a pinch of turmeric to my mask – a little tip from an old Fijian healer. Works great for pimples. Can also add a little pinch of rolled oats if you have acne-prone skin – the mask will obviously be a bit lumpy though.
Lori
Thanks Kate! I think the ACV can bother some with sensitive skin, it is pretty strong. I prefer to use it with water now too.
Ally
Hi there,
Can just water be used with the clay? Or does ACV need to be added?
Thanks
Lori
You can use either one. When I use water, it’s a little more of gentle mask and with the ACV it feels more powerful. If you have sensitive skin, I would first try it with water. But, both ways work great!
Eagle
I just got it on Tuesday and through these two days I’ve been enjoying it. The first time I let it sit ony face for 15 to 30 minutes, but now I’m increasing it to an hour. I just want to even out my skin tone, and minor scars thats all lol. There are so many benefits to this product, it’s amazing!…. as of right now my face is pumping so fast because of it but it’s worth it for a smooth face lol.
Lori
Hope you get great results! I increased how long I leave mine on to 45min to 1 hr. because I put it on fairly heavy, so it takes longer to dry.
Flo
Hmmm…quite strange to see how faces react to bentonite.
I too used it a few days ago, but my face didn’t turn red so I wondered if it still worked.
When I completely cleaned my face I was happy to see it was smooth and half of the black heads were off. (I did not count them lol)
I will keep on using it and already order a new batch. (I leave in Germany and here you have to order it in the pharmacy.).
So happy to be able to enjoy my own spa at home 😉
Take care of you girls and live well!
Lori
Glad to hear it’s working for you! That’s great it helps with blackheads too.
Cindy Lee Teep
HI
Do you recommend using it during the day or at night before bed time? if using in the morning, can I apply make up right after?
Thank you
Ann
Hi Lori, do you sell bentonite clay? Would love some.I’m in Nairobi Kenya
Lori
Hi Ann, I don’t sell it, but you should be able to find it at a local health food store or online.
Anonymous
Hı anne just read your inquiry on where to purchase the clay. This might be too late in coming but just bought one at t-mall, 1st floor next to the food court.there is a beauty shop there.
karissa
how often can we use this mask? can we use it everyday in our daily routine? or is that too harsh? should we only use it 2-3 times weekly?
Lori
Most use it once or twice a week. I was using it every day for awhile and it really helped clear up my skin, but I cut back this winter because my skin has been dry from the harsh winter.
Lauren
I have had amazing results using this method, except I add a teaspoon of raw honey. It helps to moisturize the skin, but also acts as an anti-inflammatory! This helps keep my skin from getting too red right after using the mask! I’ve never tried mixing it with ACV though! I’m excited to give it a shot!
Lori
I’ll have to try it with honey, sounds great! 🙂
Medisa
Hello
I just want to know how many minutes we can put the mask on the face ?
And also after washing the face , should we use something like moisturizing for skin because my skin becomes so dry .
Thanks
Lori
I put it on for about 15 to 30 minutes. When it feels completely dry, I rinse it off. I just started using hempseed oil as a moisturizer and love it! It has a zero rating on the comedogenic scale so it won’t cause any breakouts.
Anonymous
I like using sheet mask afterwards to put moisture back into my skin. The result are amazing! my face feels so silky and smooth.
Yvonne
Friendly word of caution: Please do not let the clay dry on your face. Estheticians recommend removing the mask when the clay has lightened and is still slightly tacky on the face. As the clay dries, it does absorb oils and impurities, but when it dries completely, it will also pull healthful moisture from your skin cells, making some skin feel dry, patchy, and irritated, causing some users to over moisturize.
Love your website and look forward to perusing it further!
Meg Bee
As long as you have soft, smooth, healthy, already-moisturized skin it is fine to leave it on for 30 min. It’s only drier skin types that need to worry about this. The cost helps to dry out and too, I have never experienced a bad reaction to leaving it on and I do one hr. I use shea and other butters daily though so my face can sometimes use the drying effect. It’s all about experimenting w/ what’s right for the individual.
Yvonne
Hi, Meg. It’s great that you can leave a clay mask on without experiencing any ill effects, and that your skin care regimen works for you. I just noticed some comments noting a poor experience with clay masks, and wanted to share something I had learned from professionals.
Generally speaking, having anything sit uncomfortably tight on your skin is not good for it, regardless of your skin type. Most people are not as fortunate to have “soft, smooth, healthy, already-moisturized skin,” and are looking to use clay masks to purge and repair their skin. Even so, I have smooth, but sensitive combination skin, which means my T-zone can get oily. For me, and most people, leaving on a clay cleansing mask more than 5 minutes causes redness, and redness (inflammation) is an indicator that something is wrong. The product description for the powdered clay (in the original post) says redness is normal per their 10-15 minute application suggestion, but normal doesn’t mean optimal.
To err on the side of caution, I gentle wipe off my clay cleansing mask (with no ACV) within 2 or 3 minutes. Then, I swipe my face with cooled, steeped green tea. Lastly, it takes just 2 drops of kukui nut oil (or jojoba/argan/marula/rose hip, etc) to moisturize my entire face without a trace of oiliness. I love this regimen because the ingredients are pure, simple, undisputed by skin care professionals, and have helped my complexion normalize and look better than ever!
I really appreciated the article on this great site, but again, I just wanted to share what I had researched and learned. Many DIY facial treatments recommend products that seem to work great, but can harm facial skin on a cellular level and are not recommended by professionals (ACV, lemon juice, baking soda, sugar/salt/pit scrubs, coconut oil/olive oil, etc).
🙂 Hope my comments are helpful, and clear up any misunderstandings! Lastly, Lori, thank you for sharing your clay regimen!
Wren
Yvonne –
I altered my method to what you described and wanted to say thanks. I’m older and have been fighting a battle with a mild case of perioral dermatitis that was made worse when a dermatologist misdiagnosed it and prescribed hydro-cortisone. (Apparently, one of the WORST things one can take for it.) I found a new dermatologist who prescribed antibiotics, but it was still being stubborn. The clay mask has helped, but when I added your suggestions of removing it before it dried completely and the green tea followed by rose hip oil….well, that did the trick. My current dermatologist was so impressed she’s now using your combination technique herself. Thanks again.
Faith
Awesome, sensible advice. Well expressed.
Nomsa
Hi Yvonne, I also have very sensitive oily combination skin that is rashy and has mild acne. Furthermore I get small red bumps if I use exfoliating products. Can you take me through your clay combination and how you use it? I’ve been on and off dermatologist and the results are just short lived and I’m just tired of taking antibiotics. Maybe this might help. Thanks
Anonymous
Very respectful alternative suggestions for the use of the clay, thank u kindly.
Amy E
Awesome advice. You & Lori are so knowledgeable, I love it. Thank you ladies!
Faith
Ive tried a variety of bentonite clay masks, some with added active charcoal. I can’t seem to be able to apply a mud consistency to my face. As it dries it pulls my skin so tight I feel like my skin is going to crack open! I have to keep mine semi thin so I can last long enough for it to dry. Does anyone else experience this?? I love my clay masks, my skin feels so soft and amazing afterwards.
Lori
You may need to add more liquid to the mixture (water or apple cider vinegar). Sometimes I don’t put enough liquid and it begins to dry too quickly.
Cherise
Oh my, I tried this mask for the first time a few mins ago with ACV, whew, it was the bomb. It was tightening on my face, when it was drying, it started to crack and when I washed off, I saw that the cracks had printed on my face, lol. My face feels so soft and smooth. I love it. It tingled for the length of time that it was on my face, but it was not unbearable and boy was I red after removal. More so on my neck and chest than face. But all in all I enjoyed it, thanks for the recipe! 🙂
Lori
Yay! Glad you like the mask.
Kirsten Thomas
I use the clay for various things, and am going to try the mask. I will tell you, that when I had an egg white mask at a spa recently, they helped remove it by rubbing aloe all over it, letting it sit a minute or two, and then steaming it off with washcloths. It came off easily, and I am thinking this would be an easy way to remove the clay too. Thanks for the great idea
Lori
Hope the mask works good for you! It’s my favorite one to use (I have it on right now lol).
Ari
hi everyone. i would like to ask, before wearing this mask? did u guys do some exfoliation on the skin first? if u do, can you share me your regime. i would really like to try before i wear the mask for optimum result. im suffering from acne and it left me with very dark scarring and i was hoping this mask would help. Also, is it safe for me to change the ACV option to lemon?
Lori
I don’t typically exfoliate before because the mask itself helps exfoliate. It’s pretty powerful too 🙂
Ari
ive been using it for almost 2 weeks now. but it seems like small pimples have been growing on my skin and im freaking out and i popped them. it leaves scar. and i did not see any changes to my old scar being faded. is it normal?
Lori
Are you seeing less pimples? or is it about the same?
Emily
holy bagezus… I put this on my face and now it is as red as a beetroot and burning. Use with caution people!!
Lori
Oh my, sorry to hear that! Maybe everyone should do a small patch test first. It does turn my skin pink afterwards (which is expected) and it lasts about 30 minutes.
djouma
I M currently using the bentonite clay but is it normal dats my acné is getting worse because of dat??
iba
yes it normal as stuff is being drawn out you will get flare ups before it settles
Lori
You’re skin shouldn’t get worse..mine got better after one use. How long are you leaving it on? Are you using vinegar or water?
djouma
Im using Water and i wait 15 or 20 min
Lori
That’s what I do too. Maybe just try it on a small area of your face first.
Jaya Turner
I know I’m late but yes it is VERY normal for your acne to get worse. Due to it drawing out toxins, it will be brought to surface. What you have to do is apply the mask daily for two weeks (or more, until your face clears up). When your face is clearing up use the mask less.
Alissa
I don’t really have that much acne on my face but I got this for just a nice clay mask. I haven’t used it in a while and my face has been getting more acne then usual (not from the mask) So I started using it again because I have a big event coming up. It did make a lot of my pimples get a little more bigger but they ended up going away after. It just seemed like it was bringing the inside of the pimple closer to the surface. I just reapplied again to places that had the most acne again the next day. All though it can dry out your skin I decided to go to bed with no cream on my face that for a night to let my skin breath. My skin is almost completely cleared now. It just seems like that maybe you have a bit of pimples under your skin that are coming to the surface. I also use benzonite clay mixed with water and two powder capsules of activated charcoal and make a thick but easily spreadable mask I like using regular bottled water or alkaline bottled water.
Rita
Your skin will get worse if you overuse it.. every day is too much.. If you remove too much oil your skin will get too dry and react in order to achieve balance again.
Anonymous
Very normal. It’s pulling all the impurities up. It gets worse before it gets better. That applies to any acne wash that truly works 🙂
Anonymous
Is it okay to put on peel off mask after they are on the surface?
Manish Jain
we have a bentonite clay with saffron use this clay to make skin sfot and shiny
Holly.G
What do you do with remains of mix. I want to save in a glass bowl and don’t know If I should refrigerate it or just leave it out covered in plastic wrap or a glass jar.
Lori
It hardens over time. So, I usually just make enough for one application.
Hannah
I put mine in a plastic tub with a lid and noticed it still hardened a bit but not as much as if I were to leave it out, and I was still able to use it the next day. If you are going to store it for a while I’d add extra water before you store it so that it doesn’t harden too much
Lori
Thank you for sharing!
Ekay
Pls,is it good for sunburn?
Lori Ryman
I’ve never tried it for sunburn.
Inni
Yes, It’s normal. This stops after 20 min. And I wouldn’t say that it burns- it’s quite warm, but not doing you any pain.
Might be warmer though if you have dry skin.
Tiffany
Mine too! It’s freaking me out!
Tracy
It freaked me out too holy crap
Anonymous
Burning can be from the vinegar. I can’t use it with vinegar, but I like a little honey in it.
Anonymous
I mix mine with coconut milk instead of water and/or acv. I have also used aloe Vera gel/juice in place of the water or acv. Give those a try. I have also added olive oil in my mix also.
Anonymous
Interesting, i must try with milk
Anonymous
Omg I know! Holy crap

Redness and a slight burning/pulsating sensation are side effects of using the clay and disappear in about thirty minutes, so don’t use it if you have somewhere to be fast
Anonymous
I’m not sure if most people know this but when you are using a clay mask you should NOT let it dry completely on your skin. When the clay is wet on your face, your skin is absorbing the minerals. When it’s starting to dry it increases blood flow. When it’s completely dry it’s sucking the moisture from your skin. I’ve used it the “wrong” way and it caused a pimple to form and made my face red. The “right” way to do it is to plaster a thick layer on your face then rinse it off when it’s not quite dry (takes about 10-15 min for me). Even though your skin will likely still look a little reddish, it should be less.
Anonymous
Hey thanks! That’s good to know!! 🙂
Veronica
When you first begin using it that happens. I’m African-american and I was beet red when I first used it and it itched like crazy. Now not so much and my skin is silky smooth! It also itches like crazy but that is because it is pulling toxins from your skin. Try less time initially and work up to 20 minutes it’s all you need.
Carolyn
Hi Veronica, I’m also A “woman of color”! And very curious as to what to expect! I am trying it on my feet first, lol I am experiencing a pulsating sensation, which I hear is very normal. I’m excited to learn more. Take care and best wishes!

I don’t think u did it right or maybe your skin is allergic to something in the powder.

It’s SUPPOSED to do that! That is your blood being brought to the surface, which is a good thing. it is delivering blood and oxygen to the surface which feeds your skin!

The redness is normal. Some are more red then others because of sensitive skin but my skin got used to it.

I do mine at night. I have sensitive skin and it leaves or really red and blotchy for a while but it’s always fine by morning.
