Make your own natural DIY fabric freshener spray with only 3 ingredients. It’s easy and inexpensive to make! It will remove odors and leave a fresh scent.
Did you know that products like Febreze are not legally required to let you know what chemicals are in their products? Their label only lists a few harmless ingredients such as water, odor eliminator derived from corn and light fragrance. However, they have so many unlisted chemicals that they do not disclose! I never knew how potentially harmful they could be to us, our children, and pets. That’s why I started making and using my own natural DIY fabric freshener spray. I love using natural methods to remove odors and make my house smell good.
Here are only some of the chemicals that are in Febreze, but are not on the product.
- Diethylene glycol
- Monoethyl ether
- Methyl pyrrolidone
- Hexyl cinnamal
These chemicals are linked to cancer, developmental problems, hormone disruption, and poison to nerve cells. You wouldn’t want this around you or your children whose nervous systems and brains have only begun developing.
Not to mention they can be irritants of eyes, skin, lungs, and linked to asthma. It boggles my mind that many aimlessly spray this around their homes.
These chemicals are difficult to research unless you are familiar with chemistry. Who knows what effect they could have on your body? I always want to know what I am spraying around my house in case my pets or children come into contact with it.
Once you spray Febreze, it lingers in the air and on surfaces for a little bit. That’s how it makes the room continuously smell nice. Turns out that Febreze does not get rid of the odors, it only covers them up. So instead of just breathing in the odors you’re breathing in the odors and the harmful chemicals! That’s why I’ve made sure all of these chemical products are no longer in my home and I always use this Natural DIY fabric freshener spray instead.
I was so relieved when I figured out I could make the same odor-eliminating concoction without all the harmful chemicals with only a few ingredients.

The most important ingredient in this natural DIY fabric freshener spray is the baking soda, which acts as an all-natural odor eliminator. It takes the smell out of the air, without putting harmful chemicals in.
The distilled water is easiest to use because it is previously purified. There is no doubt about potential chemicals and the source of the water.
You can use different types of essential oils depending on what types of scents you prefer. The possibilities are endless for this DIY fabric freshener spray. My favorite fragrance is lavender essential oil because it smells like fresh flowers and laundry.
