Eyeliner is one of my favorite types of makeup, so when I decided to stop using all of my toxic commercial makeup, I needed to find an alternative for it. I did try a brand that sold a “natural” eyeliner stick awhile back, however, it didn’t seem to work well and every time I tried to apply it, the tip of the pencil would break off.
I did some experimenting with making all different kinds of makeup and I figured out the perfect solution for a liquid DIY eyeliner using aloe, which is gentle and soothing, along with activated charcoal, which gives the recipe it’s black color.
I love using this DIY eyeliner! I apply it just about every single morning. It goes on easily and is very gentle. I don’t typically have to reapply it throughout the day, unless I’m going out at night when I’ll sometimes apply some more on my top eyelids.
I also made a quick YouTube video, posted below so you can see how I make the eyeliner and how it looks before (with no eyeliner) and after. Sometimes it’s hard to tell just from a picture.
Benefits of this Natural DIY Eyeliner
It’s easy to make! This has got to be one of the easiest recipes ever for a DIY eyeliner. You only need two ingredients, aloe vera and activated charcoal. Just mix them together and you’ll create a fantastic liquid eyeliner.
There are no harmful ingredients in this recipe. In most (if not all) store bought eyeliner, you’ll find harmful and toxic ingredients such as coal tar dye, parabens, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. I particularly don’t like applying anything on my skin so close to my eyes with those harmful ingredients. I’m sure some must be absorbed in to the body.
How Long Will the DIY Eyeliner Last?
I typically make enough to last a few weeks or a month at a time. You can definitely increase the recipe to make as much as you would like. Based on my research, when these two ingredients are combined the shelf-life should be about a year, so you can certainly make much more. The main reason I only make a smaller amount at a time, is because it is a liquid eyeliner and you have to use a makeup brush to apply it. This means, when you dip the brush in each time, the chances of getting more bacteria in the mixture/on your brush increases. To keep it fresh, I like to clean my container every so often and clean my makeup brush after each use.
